FAQ

What is the Parish Plan?

It is a document covering all the topics that are of concern to OUR community. Such as Leisure, Employment, Education, Transport, Health, Housing, Safety, Culture, Sports, Environment and any others areas that concern you...
It will include a profile of where you live, what your views are of the area now, and the things that you want done in Wraxall and Failand in the future.
It will allow all who live or work in the area, of all ages, an opportunity to determine the future by having a say about issues that affect you and what you want done about them.
It will culminate in an action plan looking forward for 5 years to turn what we want into what we can have.

When will this happen?

It has already begun. We have already set up a Steering Group and have begun consulting with local organisations Two public meetings were run in September 2007 in Wraxall and Failand to find out what are the things you want to be asked about in our questionnaire.

Map

Where is our Parish?

The map (click to enlarge in new window) shows the boundary of Wraxall and Failand. The parish is rural and green belt. The Failand limestone plateau of open fields falls away to the north with woods and farms and to the south with steeply wooded hillsides and scattered housing. The estates of Tyntesfield and Belmont are in the central area and separate the urban village of Failand from the ancient village of Wraxall.

A new housing estate, The Elms, is at the South West adjoining the boundary of Nailsea. At the east end of the parish is Bristol and Clifton Golf Course and sports fields. A single road runs B-3128 along the top of the ridge and another B-3130 along the bottom. Three steep roads link these.

The area has three Pubs, the Battle Axes, the Barn and the Failand Inn. Lower Failand has a village church. Failand has a village hall and post office and Wraxall has a Church, school and social club.

Because the parish comprises several areas, each with its own identity, we expect the survey to identify where there are separate issues and needs and also where there are common problems and wishes which can be addressed together.

Who will be consulted?

Everyone in the parish* of Wraxall and Failand will be consulted. Also every interest group, company, sports group based in the area, or who use the area will be consulted.

(*by the way this is non-religious plan, and we are a non religious steering group It just happens that at the first tier of government we have Parishes in the UK, and ours happens to be Wraxall and Failand).

What is happening now?

Copies  of the plan have now been put through all doors in the parish.

How will I be consulted?

We have held public meetings to find out what issues you want us to address. There is also now a web site to provide information. We will publish articles in local newspapers.

Ultimately questionnaires were distributed to all households in Wraxall and Failand, over 1,000 of them. All views will be anonymous and non-attributable. There will also be questionnaires distributed to groups, companies and interest groups to get collective views.

Is everyone doing one?

All Parishes in rural areas and Towns have the opportunity to do their own plans. Locally Congressbury, Abbotts Leigh, Long Ashton, Pill have recently completed plans. We are just starting.

Do I have to get involved?

Participation is entirely voluntary. On the positive side, the greater the representation of views on specific topics the more weight will be carried when trying to put pressure on those in authority who make the decisions for improvement and change.

On the negative side, if you do not express your views, do we assume you are content with things, or you think nothing will change, or you've got more important things to worry about? In that case others will decide for you.

Will it really change anything?

We hope so. We can only go on the experience of local areas who lobbied successfully for change to such things as traffic calming, play areas, improved pavements and lighting. We do know North Somerset Council has said it will take into account the views of the Parish Plan.
